The Waterside Sailing & Rowing Club was organized in 2009 for the purpose of promoting interest in sailing and rowing at Waterside. The Club has acquired a J-24 sailboat and two Whitehall Solo 14 slide seat rowboats for exclusive use by its members. Sailing and rowing are two sports which bring the family together where everyone can participate, developing team skills, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment. All of this while enjoying the unparalleled beauty of Flathead Lake.
No matter what your style: racing, day sailing or cruising, the International J-24, which is built in the U.S., Japan, Australia, and Italy, has more than 50,000 people sailing 5,300 boats in 150 fleets in 40 countries. A dual-purpose sailboat, the J-24 is the ultimate boat for a day of sailing adventure, whether racing or just loafing on Flathead Lake. Her flared topsides keep her dry on deck. Her "weekender" cabin makes it possible to get warm on cold days, and she can be sailed easily by one person with only the mainsail. Come bring your family for a lifelong experience (taken from www.jboats.com/j24/j24intro.htm).
Slide seat rowing is no longer only for trained athletes. The Whitehall Solo 14 rowboats are stable and perfect for fun and fitness, with the benefit of rowing a shell and the stability and safety of the Whitehall design. The boats are made in Vancouver, Canada and are used for recreation, fishing, transportation, and fitness. In fact, they have found their way to Europe with an owner sailing and/or rowing in the waters of Elba. Think about it…if Napoleon had this boat, we might all be speaking French. Anyone can easily learn to slide seat row the Solo 14. It's virtually unsinkable. There is even room for passengers. The Solo 14 is also a fitness machine! The sliding seat turns this light classic into an exercise machine for double the calorie burn of jogging. Both legs and all major muscle groups are used for the stroke with no impact on joints or ligaments (taken from www.whitehallrow.com).

The lake is generally an excellent place to sail, but it is fair to say that the weather can change quickly. Sailors will want to keep an eye out for weather from the west and/or south. During the months of July and August, thunderstorms can build in the afternoons and cause squalls, with winds that can be quite intense and come up with little warning.
The south end of the lake, Polson Bay, which is almost completely closed off from the rest of the lake generally has light and variable winds, unless a front is coming in from the west, in which case the breeze will...
